Blog #9 Diverse Learner Units

AFTER you turn in your DLU, share: 1. What was toughest for you in creating your unit? 2. How do you feel your presentation went/will go? And finally, 3. How realistic were your accommodations and how hard do you really think implementing your lesson to diverse learners will really be?
Blog by Sunday, Nov. 8th and respond by class time Wednesday, Nov. 11th.

  1. The toughest part of creating the unit was making sure I could actually use my lessons, even if they don't go with the unit itself. I feel like my presentation will go well, and I've prepared enough for it. I'm a little nervous about my activity because I'm afraid it will go a lot differently than I have pictured it in my head. I've feel like my accommodations were okay but I feel like once I get to know the students in my classroom accommodating will be a little more simple. It was hard to accommodate this unit because we didn't have any students that we could focus on who have these exceptionalities.

    1. I think your lesson went well and was also very engaging. I too was nervous about my lesson because i was afraid that i would either go over my time limit or not finish in time. Also, i agree that once you get to know the students, making the accommodations for them will be easier.

    2. I thought your lesson was great, and it went really well with the entire unit. Hopefully Phil learned something! I think you presented very well too, you had minimal "uh" or "um" while talking, and you were loud and clear about what we needed to know.

  2. I think the toughest part of creating my DLU was coming up with the criteria to grade them by and by how many points they should get for each section. Also, i had to worry about not giving them too much to do within the first few days of the lesson. I think my presentation went well because i did not go over my time limit, got to teach one of my lessons, and had time for questions at the end. My accommodations were realist because sometimes a teacher may have to use visuals and paper copies for the students to be better accommodated and ready for the lesson, and to understand what is being taught. I think it will be somewhat hard to implement my lesson to diverse learners because i may not have a large classroom for students to move around in.

    1. I agree, coming up with how to grade them was pretty difficult. You don't want to be too harsh or too easy. And with yours, there is a lot to do so you have to make sure you don't overwhelm them with a bunch of things at one time. I also think you had good accommodations that went with your lessons very well.

  3. The toughest part for me was creating my final project rubric because I didn't know if I was being to harsh on them or not. This forced me to think hard about this because I didn't want to be to hard on the students and I didn't want to make the assignment to easy because, I was aiming for a fun challenge and if I went to far one way I wasn't going to achieve that. I think my presentation went okay there was several things I can improve that me ad Dr. Bum already talked about such as not trailing off on my sentences and being more consistently excited because both will help keep my students attention. My accommodations were fine but need some work also I think that given practice and some improvement my DLU would do well in a real setting

  4. 1. The hardest part about creating this unit was deciding what was most important for my students to know and deciding how I wanted them to learn it. Keeping each type of learner in mind is difficult but making accommodations really helped me think about it.
    2. I think my presentation went well. The lesson went well but I think I could have included a bit more about my overall unit like the rubrics.
    3. I think my accommodations were realistic. It was difficult to figure out things that what work for each type of student. I think it will be hard to implement them in your classroom at first, but once you are used to it and get to know your students better it will become much easier.

  5. The toughest part in creating the DLU was looking up the standards on DESE. It was hard for me to find the ones that I really liked and understand them. I think my presentation went okay, I know I talked too fast. Also, the lesson did not go as smoothly as I had hoped, but it made a difference that there were people in the class that I didn't expect to be in here and it wasn't as dark in the classroom as I would have liked it to be. However, I do think my accommodations were very realistic and applied well to my lessons. So I think my lesson would be good for a diverse learner unit.
