Blog #3 Assessing and Evaluating in Learning Different Environments
You have now applied various types of learning and teaching:
- Creating learning styles activities
- Jigsawing
- Whiteboarding
- Evaluating one another
Now that you are really delving into evaluating and assessing activities and one another, consider how you will accommodate peer evaluation in your
classroom. How will or did activities like learning strategies, jigsawing, whiteboarding, and even the Leadership Compass
open your eyes to how differently we all learn and interact with the concept of
learning? How important is it to let students play a role in assessment (whether peer assessing, creating their own learning strategy activities, or even writing their own quizzes)?
Blog by Sunday night, and respond to your compass group classmates by class time on Monday, Sept. 14th.
I will accommodate peer evaluation in my classroom because it shows students how other students learn and think about certain things, and will most likely get them thinking from a different perspective. The different activities showed me that students really do learn in different ways, just like I do. I think it is super important for students to play a role in assessment because they get to create their own quizzes and study methods. This let them feel important and like they are the teacher. It also gives them a different way of retaining the information.
ReplyDeleteI agree that students should be involved because they can see each other's exceptions and a feeling of involvement in their learning.
DeleteIncluding peer evaluations in the classroom is a good because like you said it can show the students how each of them learns and they may be more accepting to the corrections or criticism of the students than the teacher.
DeleteI think having peer evaluation in a classroom is important, even with younger students. I could accommodate peer evaluation in my classroom if students are presenting in front of the class. I may use the evaluation from their peer to calculate their final grade, but I could also let them practice in front one or more other students and have those students give evaluations, then let the presenter read the evaluations before they present in front of me and the whole class. The activities we did in class helped me see how others learn. Jigsawing showed me that each of us find different things that we think are important and that teaching our peers will help us retain the information we read. The learning strategies should be how people prefer to use different tools to help them learn. So, it is important to give your students the freedom to create their own tools so that they are meaningful and helpful to them.
ReplyDeleteIt is important to let your students play a role in assessment because they get the chance to feel that their opinion matters. Sometimes students do not care about their work as much when a teacher will grade it but when they know their peers will be evaluating and assessing their work they may put in more effort.
I completely agree that peer evaluations can still be used in the younger classrooms. Having students apart of the assesment process brings more of a sense of community.
DeleteI agree with the peer evaluations being important no matter the age because it gets them involved with their peers early. I also agree that it could make them work harder because their peers are the ones grading them and kids hate looking bad in front of other kids.
DeleteI like the idea of having peer evaluations in the classroom. Not only teachers but students can see the different styles of learning. As for students, hopefully they would understand that there is no wrong or right way to learn. Listening to the compass groups was a little difficult for me, considering I'm not an auditory learner and hearing the other group so it was hard to focus on my group members. When I was reading my portion of the chapter, I was doing the whiteboard activity as well. I was writing down or highlighting my ideas in the book, especially ones I felt was important.
ReplyDeleteHaving students participate in the assessment process is important because they can create their own study materials or methods. As well as feeling involved in their learning.
I feel that it was also difficult for me to listen to our group members talk about what they read because of the noise from the other group in the background and that writing stuff down and seeing the material helps me learn also. I agree that peer evaluations are helpful and a good idea
DeleteIt is great that students and teachers will be able to see the different learning styles. I also think it is good if the students don't think there is a right or wrong way to learn. They should know that whatever way they learn best is perfectly okay, even if their best friend learns differently from them.
DeleteThe activities that we participated in class helped me to see how we all learn and interact with the concept of learning differently because as we took turns trying to complete each students project or learning activity, some people and even myself had a hard time completing a few, while others automatically knew how to do something or easily figured it out. Which shows me that some people learn faster than others or that it may take others longer to understand something because it does not come easily to them. I think it is important to let students play a role in some type of peer assessment because the feedback they get may be more accepting than having a teacher do it, and tell them what they need to work on. Also, by having the students evaluate one another it helps them find out together or individually what they need to work on or can improve on and what they already may be good at.
ReplyDeletePerhaps its not how fast or how slow students learn but it's how the information is interpreted by the student. A teacher could show students something and only two will understand but the rest of the class is still in the dark because they interpreted it completely different. Basically there are a thousand ways to skin a cat...and teach.
DeleteI completely agree that when students have the option to evaluate other students, it shows them what they can work on and improve in their own situations. I definitely had a hard time with some of the activities that others excelled with, and vice versa.

ReplyDeleteAfter learning the importance of jigsaw, white boarding, and so on, I definitely think that I can incorporate peer evaluation and opinions in to my early childhood classroom. For instance, if a student is doing a show and tell, I could ask the other students what they thought about the presentation. I would love to use whiteboards in my classroom often because it will get all of my students engaged in conversation, even if they are shy or reserved. This unit has truly made me realize all the differences in learning styles and personalities that need to be addressed in my future classroom.
ReplyDeleteI think that using white boards for the young kids is a great idea because they love using them. Also it lets you know where some kids stand in your classroom and lets you identify who you need to help more.
DeleteI think that white using boards is a great idea to get students that are more reserved to be more involved in discussion. Working in groups is a good way to help those students communicate more.
DeleteI think it is important for us as future to understand these tools and how to use them. The one I will use most is evaluating each other's work. It'll mostly be on like projects and some homework that I have them evaluate but I think this would be the most effective for me. I might also use jigsawing for the shorter lessons so that the kids have a chance to work on presentation skills and not have to worry about to much. The reason I like these two is because it gets the students involved with each other and with certain lessons that they would teach and this is great because the more they are involved in the class the more they can learn.
ReplyDeleteI agree that using jigsaw is a good way for students to practice presenting. It is a lot less intimidating to present information in front a few classmates than it is to do it in front of the whole class, so I think jigsawing would be great practice for that.
